One magazine described his 'beach body' as "one of the worst" - I'm sorry, what? He's so skinny and slender and hipbone-y and delicious. I like 'em scrawny.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

I officially give up on the holiday-post; it's too long and boring. A big book review will probably come, but this is far more important :)

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows.

[Divided into two, diary-style!]

Monday 30^th July

I started to read The Deathly Hallows this morning, and I am now approximately half way through. Chapter 20, page 314 to be exact. For some reason I can’t quite fathom, I was reluctant to start it, almost afraid to. Maybe because once I started it, the only thing left to do was to finish it, and I didn’t want to. Caroline said in the canteen at work, ‘It’s just a book’, But it’s not just a book, at all. Even a non-fan can understand that. It’s a phenomenon. Like it or not, anybody between the ages of ten and twenty in 2007 will be partially defined as one of the ‘Harry Potter Generation’ – it’s that huge. Honestly, I’m proud to be part of that generation – I’m just older than Harry and his year, and we really have grown up with them. And now, as our adolescence comes to an end, so does this.

As for the book so far, just … wow. Much as I was reluctant to begin, by a few pages in, I was hooked – much to the continual agitated grumblings of my family. It’s not because it’s the best book ever written [though I think it’s the best of the bunch, language wise]. If there’s one thing JK can do, it’s engage, and that’s what makes it so compelling. You just feel everything that she writes, the characters are so vivid and passion-filled – Ron and Hermione in particular have been marvellous this far. The absence of the supporting characters leaves a hole – I’m hoping Neville, Luna, Ginny and the twins will reappear as I progress [though I loved Luna’s cameo at the wedding – “She looks like an Omelette!”].

But the plot – oh! Every time a new name or object stirs a memory for Harry, I feel the stir too. Everything knits together marvellously – Dumbledore’ will and legacy! Regulus! Kreacher! The sword! It’s all been great so far. I was nearly in tears at the Harry vs. Lupin moment; poor, poor Lupin, she’s just so lovely! Ron and Harry hugged! That’s been coming since book one, and it was just wonderful. Ron is just generally wonderful, I love him. GO TEAM RON!

Scary to think it’s been ten years since The Philosopher’s Stone was published, though.

Tuesday 31^st July

Monumental. That’s pretty much the only word I have to describe that. I finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows about fifteen minutes ago, and while the rest of my thoughts are relatively coherent, and of them surrounding the book seem to melt into tripe. I’ll try, but who knows what will follow.

Despite the ‘Harry is a Horcrux’ theory being the one that seems most predictable, and the one that so many spectators [including myself] latched onto, I’m glad she stuck with it. It makes the most sense, it ties everything together. I liked the ‘accidental Horcrux’ aspect though, it seemed to make one of the overall themes all the more prominent – that each and every character as a flaw, one that will if not cause their demise, will at least knock them about on the way. And, ultimately, many of these flaws are also the characters’ greatest strengths.

An explanation of Hannah’s theory regarding the Harry Potter characters – apologies if it makes no sense.

Dumbledore’s was power; in control of Hogwarts, he was magnificent, but as he admitted himself, the thirst for power as a younger man – and the relapses as he aged – caused him much loss in his life, and ultimately ended it.

Hermione’s is intelligence; the amount of times that Hermione’s knowledge and understanding of magic [and non-magic], coupled with her organisation and consideration, has saved Harry, Ron and a whole host of others is ridiculous. But all the same, her fierce empirical nature means that she often hesitates, and is wary of things like instincts, which hold no fundamental proof.

Ron’s is loyalty; Ron is a fiercely loyal character, remarkable so. His relentless loyalty to Harry and his cause is admirable, and he turns out as a character – in my eyes – equally as heroic as Harry. However, his loyalty can [and has] let him down twofold. His unwavering loyalty to Harry does mean that he often walks too far into things figuratively blindfolded, before receiving a slap-in-the-face from reality which can often cause him to freak out when he comprehends what happened – just like in the most recent instalment. Secondly, Ron latches his loyalties onto several characters and groups in his life, and so lands himself in awkward situations and with impossible situations. He has loyalties to Harry; his family; the Order; Hogwarts; Hermione; and himself, and this causes chaos for Ron when making decisions – from the most important [like following, and returning to, the quest] down to the more trivial ones [like where he stands in the Harry/Ginny debate].

Lord Voldemort’s is, quite simply, evil; his intense and frighteningly evil soul enabled him to cause such chaos and tyranny for so many years. Nobody could have done so many unspeakably terrible things without a truly evil heart, and in that respect – for a time – he was successful. However, the reason of his downfall was just as simple – evil doesn’t win. Not in that world. Voldemort continually underestimates the powers of goodness, truth and courage, relying on force and skill to prevail. Ultimately, he lacks humanity.

Harry’s defining characteristic and flaw is harder to define. Part of me wants to say bravery; and I think that is the most likely. Harry has, is, and always will be an immensely brave character, committing feat after feat of incredible courage, the bravest of which was when he stood before Lord Voldemort, unarmed, willing to die. Although he fervently denies it, Harry often does feel that ‘he has to do it al on his own’, which many mistake as greed for glory. However, when Harry realises that he is not on his own, that he is part of a much bigger army, a much bigger plan, he knows that he can play his part, and the burden of responsibility is somewhat lighter [if only slightly], and Harry can accept that, even though he is a massive part of what has happened, none of it is his fault.

Other characters I could mention also have one characteristic I can see as both their saving grace and fatal flaw – you may not agree, and do let me know if you do or don’t! Ginny’s is passion; Luna’s is eccentricity; Neville’s is determination; Molly’s is protectiveness; the twins’ is humour and lightheartedness; Sirius’ in headstrongedness; Lupin’s is fear; Lily’s is compassion; Severus’ is bitterness/love; and I suppose it could be said that James’ is a form of arrogance.

As for the rest of the story, I think it was wonderful. I just tried to recount the whole thing to Adam, and realised how immensely confusing it is, but I think – after re-reading certain parts – I’ve got it all now. I just needed to dwell on it a little for the more complex parts of the plot of slot into place.

The romantic in me was satisfied with the ‘nineteen years later’ epilogue, but the English student and pernickety side of me thought it was too sickly sweet [except for the Albus Severus thing – ee!] and rather pointless. Leaving it where it was would have been fine for me, despite angering all the shippers out there, and JK could have just used the time afterwards to explain what happened to them all [like she did here]. Buuuut, after reading Rafaella's post, I’m more satisfied with it now; as she said, JK wrote that epilogue before all the other books, or the jist of it, and that wasn’t necessarily for us. That was for her, so she could lay down her pen safe in the knowledge that she have Harry a happy ending.

I’m not a natural ‘shipper’ myself – I like certain couples, but I’m not obsessive about it. Nevertheless, I squealed with delight and jumped around the room in absolute glee when Hermione kissed Ron; it was just gorgeous. Harry just standing there, saying “Is this really the moment?” was brilliant, and Ron’s reply – “so it’s now or never, isn’t it?” was just … oh maaaaan, made of awesome. I also adored that Harry and Ron have both been learning from a book about girls – lolz! [Bet it was a little awkward when Emma Watson and Rupert Grint saw each other after reading the book though.]

But, oh, Tonks and Lupin. How could she? They were wonderful and sweet and lovely and had a son and … that was the bit I cried at most. I was already weeping over the loss of Fred [NO, only one Weasley twin! That was like a blow to the gut, I swear] and then as soon as I read their names I dropped the book. I couldn’t read on. I got even weepier when Lupin returned courtesy of the Resurrection Stone. Poor Lupin and Tonks.

I did laugh at the end, though, when Teddy and Bill & Fleurs daughter were getting it on! I did wonder, though, why Teddy was hanging around on the Hogwarts Express because, at nineteen, he’s surely too old to be going to Hogwarts now isn’t he? Hmmm …

JK really wasn’t kidding when he said it was a bloodbath, was she? A murder within ten pages, then Moody and Hedwig pretty soon after [Hedwig, no!] – it was a massacre! Fred, Tonks, Lupin, Bellatrix [uh, GO TEAM MOLLY!], Crabbe, Voldy, Snape [who was good all along - *punches air with fist*], Griphook and Dobby – oh, Dobby! My heart broke when he dies, and Harry dug the grave, definitely the most emotive of all the deaths.

In conclusion, I will present my highlight of the book.

“How do you feel, George?” whispered Mrs Weasely.

George’s fingers grasped for the side of his head.

“Saint-like” he murmered.

“What’s wrong with him?” croaked Fred, looking terrified. “Is his mind affected?”

“Saint-like,” repeated George, opening his eyes and looking up at his brother, “you see … I’m Holy. Holey, Fred, geddit?”

Mrs Weasely sobbed harder than ever. Colour flooded Fred’s pale face.

“Pathetic”, he told George, “pathetic! With the whole wide world of ear-related humour before you, you go for ‘holey’?”

“Ah well” said George, grinning at his tear-soaked mother, “you’ll be able to tell us apart now, anyway, mum!”

Doctor Who S3 Finale: Last Of The Timelords.

Usually, after an episode of Doctor Who, I – quite pathetically – bash out a few thoughts onto LiveJournal and post them as soon as humanly possible. Today I won’t. Today, I’m going to attempt to write coherently and properly about what is, in my opinion, without a doubt the best single television episode I have ever seen. It deserves it :)

I’d managed to keep relatively calm about it all – until the opening credits rolled. By jove, I was excited. Butterflies and everything.

I was quite taken aback at the beginning – I had no idea they would take the plot into the future. Great idea though – having to ‘finish’ the scenario they left it on at the end of The Sound Of Drums would have been terribly difficult.

I’d been very excited about Tom Ellis [Milligan] being in this episode, because he’s great, and he repeated that form in the episode. I really liked his character, and the ending left a nice hope of a happily-ever-after for him and Martha. That would be lovely. Plus, indulging the shallow!Han for the first of many times this evening, he’s quite the dish – particularly all rugged and bearded.

Then, just following that display of rugged sexiness, there came John Barrowman … tied up … and dirty. I swear that LiveJournal has transformed me from an innocent child into a filthy-minded man!fiend. Or, maybe it’s just the Barrowman-Vibe; I’m pretty sure that man could get and erection out of a stone.

The musical scene with John Simm was just wonderful. And hilarious in the extreme. In last week’s Doctor Who Confidential, each and every interviewee – be they actor or writer – said the same word to describe the Master: Insane. He is completely, utterly and totally stark-raving bonkers, and it’s brilliant. Usually, somebody ‘going mad’ involves them sitting in a corner, hugging their knees and rocking back and forth, but the DW writers unleashed this monster that somehow managed to balance ‘mad’ and ‘adorable’. And hats off to John Simm – he was just incredible. That performance just makes me want to go out and buy both series on Life On Mars. He was manic and funny and sweet and evil and naïve and wise and everything rolled into one. Plus, he is just divine. Seriously, my television nearly imploded with all the hotness in this episode.

Anyway, I digress.

Martha. Oh Martha Martha Martha. You are just incredible and I love you to pieces. Since the very beginning of series 3 I’ve loved Martha, and in my highly controversial opinion, Martha > Rose. I liked Rose a lot, but I never really felt an affinity with her in the way I do with Martha – I see myself in her more than I did with Rose, so I guess that’s why I connected with the character so well. Martha had to save the day – she was the only one who could. And she did. Girl Power. Part of me was actually proud of her – not only did she save the freaking world, but she took no credit for it. Modest, and awesome. However, I also loved the ending, where she said “I used to think I was the weaker in this partnership, but … I’m good”, or words to that effect. Damn right Martha!!

I was gutted she left, but I completely expected it. She can’t stay there, with him. Yeah, there’s the thing about looking after her family, which she will obviously do, but she had to leave for her too. She loves him so, so much, and so she just can't stay. She has her own life, and she needs to take it. She was so dignified and strong as she left – I’m glad they gave her that, rather than Rose’s more emotional [and, let’s face it, a little desperate] ending. She’s just so human, yet so incredibly powerful. I really hope she reappears in series 4.

And Freema: all those people who have slated your performances this series? Stuff ‘em. Stuff ‘em all, because you are INCREDIBLE, and you completely blew me away tonight.

Despite all the stellar performances, the star of the whole thing is still David Tennant. He can do absolutely no wrong, and tonight he was just sublime. I really had no idea what those integral words that he was going to say actually were, and when he said them, I just gasped – the way he just grasped the Master and held onto him, after all he had done, completely cemented the belief that all the Doctor has ever wanted is to find another one of his kind. And then it all collapsed.

The moment that the Master died was just gutwrenching. Literally, the second David began to cry, I did, and I just wept. I think I cried more than I did for Doomsday, and that’s saying something. The Doctor said to The Master on that cliff-edge, “I know you”, I had the echo of that line in my head the moment I realised what the Master had done. The Doctor knew that The Master would not take his own life for a trivial reason like blowing up the world, but to hurt the Doctor like nobody else ever could, now that’s a worthy cause. The Doctor knew the Master, and the Master knew the Doctor, and knew that he still had the power to crush the Doctor’s heart’s desire. It just shows the pure evil that the Master has within him – he was willing to die just to hurt the Doctor. David’s acting in that scene was just … I’m out of superlatives. He really is incredible. My stomach actually twisted as he begged the Master to regenerate, and the tears … guh. Definitely not just a [very] pretty face.

Russel T. Davies is, quite possibly, an ACTUAL GENIUS. Every single part of that plot was inspired - he deserves a medal. All the aspects of the plot were just slotted together perfectly; his writing ability is just a marvel. The Toglafane being human was so obvious, yet so unexpected, and the way the time shifted meaning it was brought back to ‘normal’ may have seemed scapegoat-y, but it was brilliant. Plus, the best and most incredible plot twist that has ever been conceived in the history of the world …

JACK IS THE FACE OF BOE. THE FACE OF HONKING BOE!

That’s how Boe knew that the Doctor “was not alone” - because he’d seen it all. He knew it would happen. It’s Jack! It’s freakin Harkness! The Face of Boe is an intergalactic man!whore … only Russel T. could do that :) I wonder if it was planned all along, thought of in the middle somewhere, or one of those ‘light-bulb’ moments in the writing of this episode. Either way, genius.

Buuuut, who was the owner of the hand with the sexy read fingernails, and what did she pick up? I originally thought Lucy, then someone suggested it was maybe Kylie Minogue’s character from the Christmas special. I suppose it could be, but if she’s involved with the special, she’d probably have more to do with the Titanic rather than the time he left behind.

Speaking of the Christmas special [oh I CANNOT wait until Christmas for more DW – that’s just cruel!], as soon as the boat crashed, my brother ran in and watched the rest of it on my TV. When he turned over the lifebelt, my brother exclaimed “The TARDIS sank the Titanic!!” – now is that a plot and a half or what?! No sodding icebergs for our RTD!!

Much as I’ve squeed about the different awesome elements of this episode, none of them have been my favourite. My favourite part about this episode? The part inadvertently combined everything that is important in my life? Prayer. Honking Prayer. Prayer saved them all in this episode. No matter what evil is going on in the world, no matter if the world is falling apart at the seams for goodness’ sake, people united in one hope and one belief can overpower any evil. It sounds cheesy and clichéd, and may come across and naïve, but it works. It carried both a wonderful Christian message, a message about Humanity, and a message about words. Like Martha said, “no weapons, just words”; words and stories and thought and imagination saved them all. Which is just wonderful.

1. A text message conversation between Becky and I just as it started:

Becky: The Master is totally sexy!

Me: I bloody know – so is that Tom Milligan guy. And Barrowman tied up? PHWOAR.

Becky: It’s a total jizz fest! I owe you.

OH YEAH, I CONVERTED BECKY! She may only be in it for the sexy guys, but she still watched it! :D

2. Some person who added me on MySpace left his weekly DW bulletin, and AGAIN said “It would’ve been better if they’d brought Rose back”. NO. NO, NO, NO!! Rose is gone, and she is NOT coming back. Sheesh.

I still have a massive post about the last few days coming, but I totally don’t have the energy to do that now. I’m all Who-d out. I think I might just get into bad and watch a film. Night, all!

YOU HAVE TO STOP THIS NOW.

MY HEAD HURTS.

I don’t really know what to write about Doctor Who. Not coherently anyway. I think I’ll resort to the failsafe bullet pointed list:

The beginning was … a little disappointing. Yeah, I figured they’d use Jack’s teleporter device, but it was a little instantaneous, wasn’t it? Mainly to move the plot along, obviously, but still.
John Simm was just INCREDIBLE. CAPSLOCKED INCREDIBLE. His childlike, psychotic and rather hilarious Master was awesome – I love how he and the Doctor are so similar, yet so different.
The phone conversation, I thought, was really effective. From the Doctor’s “I’m here”, it just clicked into srs mode, and David’s pleading was completely believable. Plus, having to tell the only remaining one of your species how you’re planet was destroyed is a pretty tough gig.
IF MARTHA DOESN’T SAVE THE DAY THEN HEADS WILL ROLL. She is awesome. She will continue to be awesome. She will pwn next week. Plus, she is being aided by the rather delectable Tom Ellis, being bearded and sweaty, so s’all good.
Jack looked hot, but was frustratingly redundant in the plot. Though I suppose that’s what John’s good at – standing at the side and smouldering.

HOW CAN YOU DO THIS TO ME, PEOPLE-WHO-PRODUCE-UGLY-BETTY?!

Usually this wouldn’t be the thing I would focus on most (due to the in-built shipper inside me), but HOW COULD YOU KILL SANTOS?! He used to be a git, but everything was going so well and they were going to have this big beautiful wedding and … Santos was so lovely – he was saving that guy’s life! As soon as he pointed the gun I actually shouted ‘NO, NOT SANTOS!’. The mingling with Justin’s lead in West Side Story was just tragic, and the ending with Hilda’s reaction? I was almost wailing. It was just so, so awful – how much more of a beating can the Suarezes take?!

Alexis and Daniel – talk about cruel irony. As soon as she started panicking, it all clicked in my brain and I was just squealing – to nobody, I was on my own – BRADFORD’S MURDER PLOT. Oh I really hope they both don’t die; it’ll more than likely be some kind of amnesia/brain damage storyline, if the other plots are anything to go by.

And, last but not least – THE DREAM IS DEAD. Henry/Betty is no more. Charlie Must Die – THE CHEATING, MANIPULATIVE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE PERSON! My inkling, as would be the most predictable storyline, it’s actually the dentist’s baby/she’s not actually pregnant - *prays that it is so* Buuuuuut, pained as I am to criticize - was it just me or did it seem a little rushed?! Not just this bit, but all of it. I'd have liked to see the plot last a little longer, but I guess they wanted quite a pacy finale.

The Henry/Betty scene on the bridge has me in tears – that adorable fumbly kiss was just so … perfect. But heartbreaking. They’re just so lovely and sweet and awkward and real. Sadface.

Explain your username: curlybeach; Okay, well … once upon a time, in Year Ten, I decided to get a perm. Not a tragic 80’s perm, but a softer one. It was pretty curly though. Anyway, my friend Becky loving nicknamed me her ‘Curly Bitch’ – I love my friends. One day she mispronounced ‘bitch’ and said ‘beach’ (which we found hilarious at the time, though now I have no idea why), and it stuck. I don’t have the perm any more, but the nickname is great for any username-type-things, because it’s pretty unique.

Explain your lj "name": Google-eyed Neanderthal; from Green Wing. Mac called Caroline that once, and it sounds pretty insulting (well, it was), but it was followed by a compliment, so that makes it okay. Plus, I’m a little google-eyed too.

Explain your journal title: Love, and a bit with the dog; when [insert real name of character] is talking about what makes a great play in the film Shakespeare in Love, he says all people want is ‘Love, and a bit with the dog’. I have no idea why, but it just seems to sum me up perfectly. My entire seems to be all about Love of different types – Love of God; romantic love; love of my friends; obsessive, fangirly love; love of general life! Plus, the ‘bit with the dog’ – the comedy bits that my life is interjected with :D

INTERESTS

Classic 90’s television: I think I love 90’s television more now than I did in the 90’s. The wonderful kids’ TV shows (Live and Kicking, The Raggydolls, ZAPP!!, and so many more!); watching Blackadder with my Dad; the endless S Club 7 TV shows – what’s not to love?!

Henry-from-accounting: This interest is more two-fold. Obviously I adore the character of Henry Grubstick in Ugly Betty – as I said to loony_daydreams t’other day, he seems to embody all the qualities I’d like in a guy; he’s sincere, honest, intelligent, nerdy, romantic, chivalrous, adorable, and has a dazzling smile. Buuut, I also love the concept of ‘Henry-from-accounting’; Betty’s crush seems to mirror my own in so many ways – you hardly know someone, and refer to them from how you know them/what they look like, but they’re the one you daydream about.

David Platt Child-of-Satan: The absolute best thing about the mandatory family viewing of Coronation Street every Sunday evening. He is just fantastic, fantastically insane and fantastically evil.

Rapping like the Queen: A phenomenon introduced by Big Gay Sam and I, in order to fill those endless free periods at college. Basically, you think of as many rap/r ‘n’ b songs as possible, then speak them how you think the Queen would do so, in a very exaggerated Received Pronunciation, and slight alteration to the lyrics. Our personal favourite? “One’s humps, one’s humps, one’s humps, one’s humps …”

Spogs: Once upon a time, anothercolour and I were fishing through a pick ‘n’ mix stall, just before going to see Brokeback Mountain (if I remember rightly?). We found a tray of those Liquorice Allsorts type sweets that are covered in tiny little pink or blue balls. Their technical name is ‘Spogs’. Omg, we laughed so much at that. It resulted in me referring to Rach (and her to me) as Rachel Spog, and coined new words like ‘spogtastic’ and ‘spogariffic’. We win at being cool.
